South Australia

Australia, state of South Australia. Nullarbor National Park is the first park on your way coming from Western Australia. This 1 200 km-long plain's name comes from Latin words meaning "no tree".
South Australia, Calca. This ghostly township, planted far away from the major highway, might be a bit too quiet to the taste of the occasional visitor.
South Australia, Point Labatt. One of the last colonies of seals prospers here peacefully thanks to this marine sanctuary located on the Eyre Peninsula.
South Australia, Baird Bay. In the lagoon, an old plough offers an unusual perch to a couple of pelicans. Across the road from the lagoon, a "clay pan" rests at the foot of the hills.
South Australia. On the Eyre Peninsula, Murphy's "haystacks" are an interesting geological site. These boulders are the only survivors of a granite layer which eroded under the action of rain water among other natural factors.
South Australia, Eyre Peninsula. A few miles away from Venus Bay, the ocean puts on a show of incredible colours. It is always fun to watch schools of dolphins surfing on the wave crest.
South Australia, Franklin Harbour. This quiet little port located on the coast of the Eyre Peninsula takes on a festive atmosphere in December when its main street loudspeakers broadcast Xmas carols.
South Australia. On the other side of Spencer Gulf, Port Pirie is an attractive town with a 19th century flair about its main streets. Even the butcher shop is a show piece, with heads of boar, bull and sheep in medallions on its façade.
South Australia. You can even find a tropical forest in Adelaide, that is if you visit the giant greenhouse in the botanical gardens.
South Australia. No, this is not England but one of Adelaide's university buildings in the city centre.
South Australia. Glenelg, a posh resort suburb of Adelaide boasts early 20th century villas.
South Australia, Coorong National Park. A 70 km-long strip of land, Younghusband Peninsula protects from the Antarctic Ocean a fawn-colored lagoon which fills up during the highest tides.
South Australia, Mount Gambier. This 80-meter deep crater lake remains a mystery. Nobody knows why in early summer in November its waters turn bright blue within a few days... and revert to a pale gray in March, when autumn returns.
South Australia, Mount Gambier. As in a typical Karstic landscape, streaming waters have dug into limestone to create gigantic caves. Whenever their ceiling collapsed, sheer vertical walls appeared in broad daylight, as here at Umpherston Sinkhole, which was turned into a beautiful public park planted with palm trees and hydrangeas.
South Australia. Mount Gambier is proud of its carefully restored and manicured city centre, a good example of which can be found in this hotel-restaurant ornamented with cast-iron balustrades and columns.
